NEW YORK (June 9) - After entering the charts 12 weeks ago, Colombian pop singer Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" finally topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart Thursday, thanks to huge download sales.
"Hips Don't Lie," featuring Wyclef Jean, amassed a record-setting 266,500 downloads, accounting for an eight-place jump to No. 1. The track also surged 37 places to No. 1 on the Hot Digital Songs tally, and led the Hot Latin Songs chart for a fourth week.
"Hips" had been held back by Epic from the digital spectrum in a bid to increase sales of Shakira's re-issued "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" album. It thusly shatters the one-week download mark of 175,500 set by rap group D4L's "Laffy Taffy" in the post-Christmas week last year.
On the Hot 100, the track bumped Chamillionaire's "Ridin"' featuring Krayzie Bone down to No. 2 after a two-week reign at No. 1. "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland kept the No. 3 spot warm while Yung Joc's "It's Goin' Down" flew up 20 places to No. 4 and held the No. 1 slot on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a third week.
Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" slipped three places to No. 5, though it retains the lead on both Adult Top 40 Tracks and the Adult Contemporary Tracks. Fort Minor's "Where'd You Go" featuring Holly Brook fell two to No. 6 on the Hot 100. Also down two were Rihanna's "SOS" (No. 7) and Cassie's "Me & U" (No. 8).
Another Rihanna track, "Unfaithful," jumped three places to No. 9 in its sixth week. Sean Paul's "Temperature" fell three to No. 10.
Rascal Flatts' cover of Tom Cochrane's "Life is a Highway," from the upcoming Disney movie "Cars," was the top debut, entering at No. 59. Lupe Fiasco's "Kick Push" (No. 79), Mary J. Blige and U2's remake of "One" (No. 86), Young Dro's "Shoulder Lean" featuring T.I. (No. 86) and Kenny Rogers' "I Can't Unlove You" (No. 98) also bowed on the chart this week.
Kenny Chesney's "Summertime" made its first appearance at the pole position on Hot Country Songs, while Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California" led both the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock tallies for an eighth and sixth week, respectively.
