I wonder why such actions are necessary.

it would be devastating to this nation if we were to lose our automobile manufacturing sector, the way we have lost the electronics mfg and most other manufacturing jobs as well. are we to become a nation of hairdressers and customer service reps?

are we going to have to ask china, japan or korea to build our tanks for us? what next? the airline mfg industry?

it's downright scary

It seems like labor agreements dont allow for any flexibility for when the company is going through bad times. You have a combination of an extremely expensive but not productive workforce that makes it hard to compete with manufacturing abroad.

Ummm...the answer is in the article you posted:

"GM has been crippled by high labor, pension, health care and materials costs, as well as by sagging demand for sport utility vehicles, its longtime cash cow. It could be facing a strike at Delphi, which filed for bankruptcy protection last month. GM spun off Delphi in 1999 and may be liable for billions in pension costs for Delphi retirees."

The customer service rep jobs were outsourced to India long ago...
